I made this drawing in high-school, when I was on my own little "planet guitar" much of the time. It's expressive of the intensity of concentration that practicing the classical guitar inspires in some people. -Jay

Classical guitar is one of the most challenging and highly developed traditions of guitar playing. A great classical guitarist is able to do with the solo guitar what great a classical pianist or violinist can do with their instrument. And just as with any other classical instrument, it usually takes years of practice to reach a basic level of proficiency as a classical guitarist.
But no-one would be willing to put in those hours and years if it classical guitar weren't incredibly fun! Which it is, of course. There's lots of great music to play, in many different styles, encompassing a wide range of emotions and tastes and challenge.
If you enjoy listening to the likes of John Williams, Julian Bream, Andres Segovia, or any of the more current players like Sharon Isbin, Manuel Barrueco, David Russell, Roland Dyens, Eliot Fisk, The Assad Brothers, then you are a classical guitar afficionado and know what I'm talking about.
Studying classical guitar informs and opens up amazing possibilities on the guitar no matter what your ultimate goal is: to play rock, jazz, popular, or simply to have fun while you explore the repertoire.
